AFC Bournemouth and Wales International winger David Brooks has become the latest member of AFC Bournemouth head coach Scott Parker’s side to sign an improved contract at Dean Court.

Gavin Kilkenny, Mark Travers, Dominic Solanke, Lewis Cook and Adam Smith have all signed contract extensions with the club since promotion to the Premier League and now it’s David Brooks becomes the latest to sign on the dotted line.

Emotionally, however, the signing of a new contract for David Brooks is probably the biggest news story of them all. Sure tying down a 3o-goal a-season striker for the immediate future is great for the club, as are all the other signings of first-team players, but none have the emotional back story of David Brooks.

Ten months ago AFC Bournemouth were shocked by the news that Cherries midfielder David Brooks had been diagnosed with Stage II Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Well wishes from all around the world flooded in for the then 24-year-old Wales international as he announced the news of his diagnosis and impending treatment.

Brooks, understandably kept his treatment private over the forthcoming months but the Cherries supporters made sure that the midfielder was always in their thoughts by giving him a standing ovation on the 7th minute of every game either at Dean Court or away from home.

In May, Brooks announced via social media that he was now cancer-free and he would later attend the game between the Cherries and Nottingham Forest, where AFC Bournemouth clinched automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Over the summer, David Brooks has returned to training and is working on inching closer and closer to a return to professional football.

The signing of a new contract proves the club have confidence that this will come sooner rather than later and what a day that will prove to be.

Brooks told afcb.co.uk

“I am so pleased to have signed this deal and am looking forward to the next few years with this great club.

“Of course, the last year has been extremely difficult for myself, my family and friends but I’m now in a position to resume my career, and getting this deal over the line is the icing on the cake.

“I am working hard alongside the excellent coaching team at AFC Bournemouth and am hoping to be back on the pitch soon.

“In the meantime, I’ll be supporting the lads every step of the way.”

Great news indeed. Here was me thinking he might want to draw a line under all his recent health issues and move on to pastures new! The fact he wants to stick around is a great sign I would say.
The return of the mercurial man…bring it on.

Already close to legend status in my opinion … If a tiny bit of his fighting spirit rubs off on the other players it can only be a good thing for the rest of the season.
Can’t wait to see our No7 back in the red n black.

That is fantastic news!
Makes it clear where he is now in terms of recovery and normality for an athlete, that he can turn his aims towards first-team football. – Join the conversation, click here.
