AFC Bournemouth travelled to Norwich for the second round of the English Football League Cup on Tuesday night, having received a bye through from the first round due to their Premier League status.

Cherries head coach Scott Parker would eventually go on to name a squad that included ten AFC Bournemouth academy products and a starting XI that saw only Marcos Senesi and Ben Pearson keep their places following the 3-0 home defeat to Arsenal on Saturday.

In came former Barcelona goalkeeper Neto, Jack Stacey, James Hill, Ben Greenwood, Lewis Cook, Ryan Christie, Emiliano Marcondes, Jaidon Anthony and Christian Saydee.

Saydee had been set for a place on the bench but was a very late replacement for Jamal Lowe who pulled out after the warm-up.

The Cherries dominated the game but still required a stoppage-time equaliser and penalties to progress to the third round.

Speaking after the game Parker told the Daily Echo

“Overall, it was a good night.

“I thought the way we played tonight was fantastic, really. The game probably should have been out of sight in that sense.

“The keeper, he was absolutely exceptional for them. He pulled off some incredible saves, really. And we’ve probably not done a lot wrong other than we’ve hit the target in those moments.

“And, I mean, he’s making saves where he’s just not got the right to do.

“I thought overall, I thought we were superb. Controlled the large parts, had some big chances and then showed big character at the end.

“To go down 2-1, with a young team on the pitch as well, to come back and then get that equaliser later on was very pleasing.”

10 academy graduates in the matchday squad I read. The first was assisted by Saydee, and the second was assisted by Sadi scored by Genesini. Anthony and Saydee taking pens as well.

Norwich might paint it as the Premier League club coming in with a second string of millions, but really they’ve been beaten by our u21s.
