AFC Bournemouth are reportedly on the cusp of confirming their seventh signing of the summer, with reports that United States of American international Tyler Adams is set to undergo his medical ahead of a £ 20 million + move from Championship side Leeds United.

The Cherries have already completed the signings of Hamed Traorè from Serie A side Sassuolo for £21 million, Justin Kluivert for £ 9.5 million from Roma, Romain Faivre from Olympique Lyonnais for a fee in the region of £ 13 million, Milos Kerkez for £14 million from AZ Alkmaar, Alex Scott from Bristol City for a fee potentially rising to £25 million and Max Aarons from Norwich City for an initial £ 7 million.

But none of these signings were made in a bid to replace Jefferson Lerma, who left the club on a free transfer to Crystal Palace during the summer.

However, Adams is reportedly the man set to fill Lerma’s boots.

The 24-year-old was recently set to join Chelsea, with a relegation release clause reported to have been activated as part of the deal.

However, talks broke down over that move to Stamford Bridge, with some claims over worries regarding a hamstring injury causing a stumbling block. Other reporters suggested that Chelsea opted to prioritise other targets.

AFC Bournemouth then reportedly also triggered the relegation release clause and talks began over a move to bring the midfielder to Dean Court.

The deal however proved to be complicated, with reports from Yorkshire press stating that Leeds United had claimed that the clause actually “expired on Wednesday”, AFC Bournemouth believed they had triggered it prior to that deadline, Leeds refuted this claim.

But a deal has now been agreed according to Sky Sports reporter Mark McAdam, who has reported that the deal is believed to be in the region of £23 million with an additional £1 million in add-ons.

The Daily Echo have reported that Adams will sign a five-year contract on the south coast, assuming he passes his medical which is set to be held in London today (Friday 18th August).

Adams will leave Leeds United following a one-year spell at Elland Road having made the move for £20 million from RB Leipzig in July 2022. He made 26 appearances in all competitions in a campaign that ended with Leeds United’s relegation from the Premier League.

Adams made 104 appearances during his spell in Germany, covering the Bundesliga, German Cup and UEFA Champions League.

Last season he made 4 appearances at the World Cup in Qatar, playing every minute of their campaign against Wales, England, Iran and the Netherlands.

Wasn’t it reported that we only found out about the release clause once it was reported that Chelsea had triggered it? It seemed as though once that deal fell through we sniffed an opportunity to hoover up a decent player, in a position where we have a need, for decent value.

Even at 23m there’s still a potential profit to be made if he maintains his fitness and plays well.
Leeds paid 20m ( plus add-ons presumably ) to RB Leipzig a year ago, so 23m a year later is not terrible.
We do need to hope that he is able to play a lot though, otherwise, we could end up losing money. 20m+ is a fair whack to pay for any player.

Still, it annoys Leeds and messes with their plans for this season, so there’s that….

It’s a strange transfer. Obviously, the injury record is a worry but other than that his market value would appear to be significantly higher than the fee paid, which would indicate good work by the club assuming this injury isn’t going to be an issue. Clearly, they could have got him cheaper if the release clause is as reported. Why are these release clauses so clandestine? Who’s purpose does that serve?

This guy is a really good player. Hopefully, he can stay healthy.

If Iraola manages to get the team going and in a good spot in the table before Tavernier, Scott and Adams are all available, this could be a great season.

Interested to see what the team is capable of in the next month.

Superb window so far and a real statement of intent. We can’t say Bill hasn’t backed us here. 120m of net spend if you include making Traore deal permanent.

A change in approach to target younger players with resale value makes sense too, we barely made anything from all of our outbound transfers this summer, so clearly not a sustainable model for us to do this every season. – To join the conversation, click here.
