One of the more surprising moves of transfer deadline day for AFC Bournemouth was the loan signing of Liverpool defender Nat Phillips.

The 24-year-old joined the Cherries on loan for the remainder of the 2021/22 campaign, with potential question marks over the fitness of both Chris Mepham and Gary Cahill leaving the Cherries light in defence following the departure of former captain Steve Cook.

It has been widely reported, including by the BBC, that Liverpool will receive a loan fee of £1.5million plus an additional £250,000 if the Cherries achieve promotion to the Premier League.

Phillips will compete for a place in the Cherries defence alongside AFC Bournemouth captain Lloyd Kelly, experienced former England centre-back Gary Cahill, Wales international Chris Mepham and recent signing and England Under-20 international James Hill.

Phillips has played for Liverpool in various competitions this season, including the contrasting experiences of playing for Liverpool Under-23’s against Bolton Wanderers in the Football League trophy, to starting in the UEFA Champions League away to AC Milan.

Excellent signing, especially as Cahill looking wobbly, either through injury or age. Being an effective sub for Van Dijk and Matip is not a bad entry on the CV! Is tall and mobile and an excellent header of the ball. What’s not to like?? – Join the conversation, click here.
