Will Tottenham regret their choice?

The managerial merry-go-round has been a weird one this summer.

Whilst there have been many clubs who appeared to be taking a long time to either make a decision or make an announcement, AFC Bournemouth included, other clubs and managers have experienced a bizarre set of circumstances.

Take Nuno Espirito Santo, he left Wolverhampton Wanderers after a very successful spell at Molineux, getting them promoted to the Premier League and qualifying for European competition and had looked all set to replace Roy Hodgson and take over at Crystal Palace, but then the deal was off.

Then he was heavily linked with becoming Carlo Ancelotti’s successor at Everton, only for that deal to also fall down. Why did he get so close to taking over at two clubs only for them to then walk away from negotiations?

He was finally announced as Tottenham Hotspur head coach last month, but he had not been the only contender for the job at White Hart Lane. In fact, Nuno Espirito Santo had previously been disregarded by the Tottenham Hotspur hierarchy for being too negative.

Hansi Flick, Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca, Gennaro Gattuso, Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag all held reported talks or were “sounded out”.

But there were two others who were considered with one reportedly being Scott Parker, prior to him leaving Fulham to become AFC Bournemouth head coach last week.

The Athletic have stated that…

“There was some early interest in appointing a young English coach who could rebuild Tottenham over the next four or five years, bringing through a new generation of young players. They considered Fulham’s Scott Parker but thought this was too soon for a man with just over two years of first-team management behind him. More consideration was given to Graham Potter, who has transformed the style of play at Brighton & Hove Albion, but only has two seasons of Premier League coaching experience himself.”

Will AFC Bournemouth benefit from Tottenham Hotspur’s decision to look for more experience? Will Tottenham Hotspur go on to regret their decision over a man who was a long way down their list of preferences?

Time will tell, but any success under Scott Parker that the Cherries will enjoy looks like it will be closely monitored by those in the corridors of White Hart Lane.
