AFC Bournemouth returned to action in the Championship on Saturday, following the international break and the devasting news that David Brooks had been diagnosed with Stage II Hodgkin Lymphoma.

The Cherries travelled to Bristol City, buoyed on by the news that over two thousand supporters were making the trip up from the south coast.

Ben Pearson was missing through suspension, whilst Jefferson Lerma was selected on the bench after he had only just returned from international duty with Colombia.

This meant a return to the starting XI for Gavin Kilkenny, whilst Jamal Lowe was also handed his first start since making the move from Swansea City and he bagged his first goal for the club just after the 20 minute mark.

A third goal of the season for 21-year-old left-back Jordan Zemura wrapped up the points to send AFC Bournemouth three points clear at the top of the second tier of English football.

Following the game, AFC Bournemouth head coach Scott Parker told the Daily Echo

“…I said that in my press conference no matter what team you support or colours you wear football has a knack of uniting people in difficult moments.

โ€œBig respect to Brooksy from the Bristol (City) fans and that was nice, that performance was for him and I know itโ€™s clichรฉ but heโ€™s a loved and liked boy in this team and in that performance today the boys showed exactly what he means to us as a team.

โ€œAgain, like I say, you score against an opposition team and that was touching really to clap and cheer that. Weโ€™re right behind Brooksy.โ€

Just got back

โ€ฆ..to Cribbs Causeway Premier Inn.

Left Audenshaw at 8.15 am.

One-stop on the way down, at Sandbach Services, due to driverโ€™s dicky tummy.

Overestimated drive time. The roads were clear so we arrived in Brizzle at 11.45 am.

Walked around the stadium, but you canโ€™t get all the way around.

Waited for the team bus to arrive. A few faces missing. Obviously, David Brooks is absent but also no Smith, Pearson (was he suspended?) or Lerma. Had some worries about defensive midfield players before the game.

Oh wait a minute, Jeff turns up five minutes after the bus, straight from the airport. Rumour was that he was allowed into the team dressing room and to play on the pitch but was not allowed to sit on the bench with other subs (he didnโ€™t).

The stadium looks like a Premier League stadium, however, Bristol City do not look anything like a Championship side let alone Premier League.

Very good to see Mr and Mrs table again. Even Rob Trent showed up!!! (although he says heโ€™s not doing a cold, wet Tuesday night in Stoke – lightweight!!) See you in Stoke Mr and Mrs table (proper supporters!)

Probably the largest away contingent I have seen in Championship, not surprising I suppose as it is one of the closer away fixtures in this league.

Very noisy and raucous.

Flare let off in the food area before the game started, another later on in the crowd.

David, David Brooks sang with gusto before, during and after the game. Very emotional. Fair play to Bristol fans who joined in for the Seventh-minute rendition and clapping.

Actually, that was really the only time we heard them. Very quiet, mind you, they havenโ€™t won at home since January.

I will leave others to describe the game in better prose than I, save to say:

1. We were brilliant
2. Our crowd were brilliant
3. Our two goals were brilliant (The away fans did not see the players waving the Number 7 when Jamal Lowe scored)
4. Did I say our crowd were brilliant
5. Bristol were only in the game for a short ten-minute spell in the second half.
6. We should have scored EIGHT, if not more. Soooo many chances.
7. Good to hear that both Millwall (training tops) and Sheffield United (36th-minute clap) showed solidarity to David Brooks this afternoon. There may have been others but I have not heard of them.
8. Defensive worries, what defensive worries?

Now stopping the night at Premier Inn at Cribbs Causeway, before making our way back to Audenshaw in the morning.

Coming out of the ground today one of the stewards said that we were the best team to have been there for years. To be honest we were so dominant it was embarrassing. Their crowd were so quiet our fans made it sound like a home game.
Great result should have been 5 or 6 but performance-wise a lot to be happy about. Gavin Kilkenny my MOM – Join the conversation, click here.
