Following the midweek defeat to Preston North End, tinkerman Tindall shuffled his pack once more, the 4-2-3-1 was once again replaced with the back three and wing-backs system with a front two, supported by three central midfielders.
This was the same system that provided one of the Cherries best performances this season against Coventry City but had sometimes failed to create enough chances to win games.
With Jefferson Lerma suspended, it was a central midfield of Philip Billing, Lewis Cook and David Brooks. Sam Surridge was alongside Dominic Solanke in the attack, Adam Smith and Diego Rico the wingbacks, with Chris Mepham, Steve Cook and Lloyd Kelly the back three in front of Asmir Begovic in goal.
Following the game, AFC Bournemouth manager Jason Tindall told Sky Sports…
“It was really pleasing. We needed to respond after a disappointing result against Preston and I felt we did that in really good fashion today. We knew we needed to start quickly because they are a tough side to play against and we knew they held a high line, so we tried to exploit that with some good balls in behind.
“We’re a team that believe we are going to score goals. We’re very good going forward, have got some very good attacking players but what pleased me tonight was the clean sheet because it’s something we knew we needed to get better at.”

The key tonight was that we went back to one of the key tactics of our Championship season. Ball played out to the full-back and an early ball whipped into space down the wing for our forwards to run on to. We used to do it with Callum all the time. With no actual wide players on the pitch, it left the space for us to use it. FAR FAR more direct today. One of the reasons Brooks is picking up a bit of flack is because he was bypassed for a lot of the game. Less to do with him and more to do with our style tonight. Nothing wrong with being direct especially when the opposition push you and a month worth of rain is dropping on you.
Would love to know the long ball stats compared to our previous games this season.
Great to get a win like that away from home.

Hugely important win tonight. Oakwell is a really tough place to come especially after 2 disappointing results. We need to kick on now and use the momentum. Enjoy the weekend ๐๐ฝ๐๐๐ฝ pic.twitter.com/A6goCeWP9D

Brooks along with the suspended Lerma has every right to be tiring slightly now. Theyโve both had the full quota of internationals to play and have been regular starters for us. Knowing Brooksโ medical history he might be starting to flag a bit. Hopefully, he recognises this himself and maybe JT can try to manage his minutes for the next few games to give him a bit of a breather. The drop off in his ability to contribute in recent games does suggest that fatigue is creeping in. – Join the conversation, click here.
