AFC Bournemouth hosted League Two side Crawley Town on Tuesday night, managed by former AFC Bournemouth backroom member John Yems and assisted by former Cherries boss Lee Bradbury.

AFC Bournemouth manager Jason Tindall treated the fourth round FA Cup tie with full respect, selecting a full-strength starting XI despite it being just three days before a crucial Championship clash with Reading.

Goals from Jack Wilshere and Joshua King saw the side safely through to the fifth round of the worlds oldest club competition for only the second time in 30 years.

After the match, AFC Bournemouth manager Jason Tindall told the Daily Echo

“…I felt we were well in control of the game from minute one. I felt we created a number of really good opportunities. The disappointing thing was we didn’t take more of the opportunities we created.

“We scored two good goals but I felt we could have scored quite a few more.

“It was a potential banana-skin for ourselves but first and foremost we wanted to go out there and deliver a really good, attacking performance.

“It was important we performed. We looked a threat every time we went forward.”

The dip in form among many players is alarming and showed even against League 2 opposition. David Brooks, Lloyd Kelly, Diego Rico, Jefferson Lerma, Steve Cook … and others below par. What’s happened here over the course of just a few weeks?? We were banging goals in, now struggling to get shots on target.

This isn’t just about formations but some systematic problem in the squad. Training? Morale? Lack of leadership? All these? It’s even more worrying than our struggles last season and a huge challenge for Jason Tindall. Has he got the management skills to get these players into some sort of form??? If not, his time at Dean Court might be rather brief.

Your say…

I agree that we are often wasteful with our well-crafted opportunities.

Having just viewed the extensive highlights on COWS I must admit however that we were simply unfortunate not to score in a few instances. Particularly in the second half, we had plenty of high-quality chances which on another day would probably have gone in. There were quite a few instances where their goalie somehow managed to block shots and was fortunate that the parried ball didn’t land at the feet of one of our boys. In most instances you couldn’t fault the technique of the players, they were chances which deserved goals. Sometimes things just don’t go your way and there was a fair bit of that last night. Things like getting too much on the shot or not quite enough can happen and that was often the case last night. Very fine margins and we could have easily won that game 4-1 or 5-1.

Reviewing the highlights also contradicted my feeling that our play continues to be disjointed. Some of the moves from back to the front last night were fast and precise. Great passing and movement, often getting the ball quickly down the pitch, which is something we’ve been longing to see for a while now.

We can already play some great football and last night we created a lot of very good chances. I’m not sure the players did too much wrong, to be honest. The opposition was somewhat fortunate in keeping the score down in my opinion.

Overall we were not brilliant but under the circumstances, ignoring the somewhat disappointing scoreline, we looked decent enough. Wilshere will make things happen for us if we continue to play attacking football. Danjuma will draw defenders in leaving space for Solanke or King to wreak havoc.

I might be a glass half full kind of guy but I am beginning to see positive signs!
The only downside is that I now have to watch us play Burnley! – Join the conversation, click here.
