AFC Bournemouth returned to Dean Court to attempt to achieve four consecutive victories in the Championship and leapfrog Reading into the play-off places in the process.

The visitors to the south coast were Coventry City, who the Cherries, under then-manager Jason Tindall had knocked four goals past and collected three points from Coventry’s temporary home at St Andrews in Birmingham.

AFC Bournemouth manager Jonathan Woodgate continued with his favoured back four of Adam Smith, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Steve Cook and Lloyd Kelly, protecting Asmir Begovic in goal.

The central midfield was Jefferson Lerma and Jack Wilshere, with Philip Billing the focal attacking threat of the trio. In attacking the wide attackers were Arnaut Danjuma down the left, David Brooks down the right with Dominic Solanke spearheading the strikers.

The attacking trio all combined inside 25 seconds to give AFC Bournemouth the dream start and whilst that early lead was peg backed within two minutes, the Cherries would go on to cruise to a comfortable three points.

Woodgate told Sky Sports after the game…

“I thought we played really well. We played with a high intensity from the start and were difficult to play against. That is what I ask for; start quick and put the opposition on the back foot. Arnuat wanted to stay on to try and get his hat-trick but it’s the team that comes first. If something happened to him in the last five minutes I’d never forgive myself.

“He will have more opportunities in his career to score hat-tricks. It is all about attitude, application and mentality because the lad’s ability has never been in doubt. A 4-1 victory is a good result because Coventry are a decent team and should be higher in the table. We can get better but onto the next one.”

Noticeable from energy and body language across the squad that morale’s improved greatly over the past three weeks. Is this down to Jonathan Woodgate? … have players finally decided to show some leadership and take responsibility? Whatever’s happening, the individual and collective quality is finally showing though. That dismal mood is lifting.

Seems to be a better team spirit developing and a good work ethic. We have always known we have good enough players it is all about getting the best out of them.
Big game Tuesday, need to keep this run going. 3 points and we are very close to getting that top 6 spot.

The reality is Woodgate is doing alright. He has found a system and keeping a consistent team that helps cohesion. I do think with Lewis Cook missing, means the midfield are less rotated.
Danjuma is on fire, and he does track back but in general the further up the pitch the better.
Billing has found a position that suits him.

We are starting to build momentum and scoring goals.

I know when he took over the team was in 6th and we are in 6th now, but we were on the slide, and we have gone from looking like a team of individuals to more of a team.

So credit where credit is due, Woodgate has got us going in the right direction. – Join the conversation, click here.
