Vital Verdict – Barnsley v AFCB

A match against an injury and Covid hit team at the bottom of the table seemed like a good chance for us to put results back on track. The return of Ben Pearson and Jordan Zemura felt a little like AFC Bournemouth head coach Scott Parker desperately searching for a combination that works. It felt a little harsh on Leif Davis who has performed well.

Once again we’ve torn a team to pieces in the first half but failed to make the pressure count. It should have been two or three. This can’t go on. Even the goal we scored was gifted by the best Grobbelaar impression I’ve seen in years.

The defence is still far short of the unit they were earlier in the season. It needs addressing.

The second half could have gone either way and we couldn’t have complained. It’s becoming a theme and another thing that needs to be addressed.

Three points are three points but let’s not overlook the glaring issues on display out there.

Positive performances:
Travers – This season has been like watching a man grow in front of our eyes. Still young for a keeper but, dare I say it, right now I wouldn’t swap him for Ramsdale or Begovic.

Zemura (attacking) – Excellent runs and a constant threat.

Solanke – He’s gone from a striker in form to a striker that can’t buy a goal. However, unlike some spells in the past, he didn’t disappear from the game and was a constant threat harrying and hassling defenders. The goals will come back if he carries on like that.

Room for improvement:
Zemura (defensively) – Looked suspect repeatedly at the back. If I was an opposing scout I’d be targeting him as a way to get at us.

Lerma – Just doesn’t have the passing game to be the equivalent of Billing on the other side of the pitch. Too often moves on that side ground to a halt. Not taking away from his defensive work but going in the other direction he was poor.

Hilariously we could go back up to 2nd and within 3 points of Fulham IF they also lose next weekend. Plenty of football to play. Fulham should really be winning the league, but there’s every chance we start breathing down the necks or slipping outside of the playoffs in equal measure. I have to be honest though, I don’t think QPR, Blackburn, Boro or whoever are that great. I personally wouldn’t fear a playoff game against anyone except Fulham. – Join the conversation, click here.
