AFC Bournemouth announced last week that Cherries midfielder Ryan Christie had signed a new long-term contract with the club.

The 28-year-old Scotland international has penned a brand new three-and-a-half-year deal, potentially keeping him at Dean Court until the conclusion of the 2026/27 campaign.

Christie made the move to the Cherries a little over two years ago from Scottish giants Celtic, for an undisclosed fee which at the time was widely reported as £1.5million. He signed a three-year contract which was due to end at the conclusion of the current season.

He began that season playing in the UEFA Champions League for Celtic, scoring in the UEFA Europa League and playing a key part in Scotland’s World Cup qualifying campaign. He ended the season with promotion to the Premier League with AFC Bournemouth with 38 appearances, 3 goals and 8 assists.

Last season he made 32 appearances in the top flight of English football, starting in 22 Premier League games.

His performances this season, have epitomised the game plan of new AFC Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola which has seen Christie’s performances, across 12 Premier League appearances to-date, put him in the fold as an early contender for player of the season.

AFC Bournemouth chief executive Neill Blake told afcb.co.uk

“We’re delighted Ryan is extending his stay with the club.

“He has been an important part of our squad since he joined us and has unique attributes, none more so than his high level of tactical intelligence.

“Ryan is a model professional on and off the pitch and he’s an extremely popular member of the dressing room.

“We’re looking forward to seeing him continue to make an impact at Vitality Stadium for the next four years.”

Good news, but why a 4-year contract when the manager is only given 2? Genuine question, as it must happen all the time where players sign a long contract, managers get fired, a new manager comes in and doesn’t rate the player, and the club is stuck with said player.
Not saying he doesn’t deserve it or Andoni Iraola will get fired – just always puzzled me.

Great news.
I’m sure Iraola will be happy about this!
Glad to have him here for the next few seasons!
