AFC Bournemouth winger Matt Ritchie has reportedly snubbed an improved contract offer at Dean Court in favour of joining Newcastle United.

According to Daily Echo reporter Neil Perrett on Twitter

‘Matt Ritchie has apparently rejected an offer to become one of highest paid players in #afcb’s history. #NUFC

His tweet followed other reports that the Scotland international was due in Newcastle on Thursday, ahead of completing a medical and signing personal terms to join the recently relegated from the Premier League side.

BBC Radio Solent Sports Commentator Chris Wise posted on Twitter on Thursday evening…

‘I understand Bournemouth winger Matt Ritchie is flying into Newcastle this evening ahead of his proposed move to St James’ Park. #NUFC #AFCB

‘Ritchie will have a medical at #NUFC tonight and deal – believed to be worth around £12 million – will be announced tomorrow. #AFCB

‘Understand Matt Ritchie will sign a 5 year deal with Newcastle United and will leave #AFCB after three and half years at the club. #NUFC

The Daily Telegraph have suggested that Ritchie ‘will almost double his wages to around £55,000 a week.’

If Ritchie were to sign a 5 year contract, earning £55,000 a week, then the 26 year old would earn in-excess, once signing on fees and bonuses are added, of £14.3million during the course of his time at Newcastle United.

Despite the financial reasons for the transfer and a move to a prestigious club like Newcastle United, the move to drop down from the Premier League to the Championship, for the Scotland International has surprised many.

He was heavily linked with a move to West Ham United at the end of the season and BBC Radio Solent’s Sports Editor Adam Blackmore has asked on Twitter ‘has something gone wrong between player & club?’

Your Say…

RobTrent said…

Really surprised that he would drop down a level.

I remember Redknapp singing his praises after the victory over Southampton.
