AFC Bournemouth and attacking starlet Marcus Tavernier agreed new terms for a new contract ahead of the players returning for pre-season training.

The 24-year-old made the move to the Cherries from Middlesbrough 11 months ago.

Whilst the transfer fee was officially undisclosed, it was widely reported, that the fee was an initial £ 10 million plus add-ons with Tavernier putting pen to paper on a five-year contract on the south coast.

Tavernier came through the youth systems at Newcastle United and joined Middlesbrough at the age of fourteen.

He made his debut in the Football League Cup in August 2017 and just two months later he was representing England at Under-19 level. He went on to make 8 appearances for the Under-19’s and would go on to play 15 times for England Under-20’s.

For Middlesbrough, he made 155 appearances in all competitions and during his first season with AFC Bournemouth, he made 23 Premier League appearances, scoring 5 times in a stuttery start for his new club due to injury.

Once again details of Tavernier’s deal have not been revealed, with the Cherries stating Tavernier “has agreed fresh terms which will see him commit his long-term future to the club.”

Following the announcement, Tavernier told afcb.co.uk…

“Ever since I started playing football as a kid, my dream was to play in the Premier League and I realised that dream here last season.

“The team aim was to stay up and we achieved that fairly comfortably in the end, silencing quite a few people who thought we were certainties to go down.

“From a personal point of view, I was delighted to make my debut in the Premier League and to score my first top-flight goal which came against Leeds, my hometown club.

“I’ve settled here quickly and everybody at the club has made me feel very welcome. I’m delighted to sign a new contract.

“The new owners have ambitious plans for the club and I want to be a part of that going forward so it was an easy decision to make to extend my stay here.”

Whilst I get being vague on transfer fees can make sense as it leaves some uncertainty around how much you have in the kitty, I don’t get why they aren’t upfront about contract lengths. It isn’t information that will remain secret when a player’s contract is running short so why not just tell us rather than talk around being specific?

Meanwhile, great news. He made a big impact last season and I’m looking forward to seeing him link up with Brooks. I have a suspicion they’ll be quite a combination. – To join the conversation, click here.
