Howe: Strange decision cost us the points

AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe had to bite his tongue following the Cherries 1-1 draw with Cardiff City on Tuesday night.

The Cherries dominated the game, hit the woodwork on three occasions, had two big penalty appeals waved away and had a perfectly good goal wrongfully disallowed by referee Lee Mason.

Whilst the penalty claims were big shouts and have regularly seen them given, the big controversy came following the chalking off of Callum Wilson’s potential winning goal.

As we have seen all season, Callum Wilson flanked the Cardiff ‘keeper Simon Moore as he was taking a drop kick from the edge of the area. Just like in previous games, he stood his ground, outside of the 18 yard box and didn’t in anyway attempt to interfere with the kick.

As Moore kicks the ball Wilson turns to run back up the pitch, the ball hits him square in the back and loops over to hit the cross bar. Wilson reacts first and tucks the ball into the empty net for a perfectly legal goal.

For a Premier League official it’s hard to believe that he doesn’t know the laws of the game, but he bizarrely disallowed the goal and booked Wilson.

Howe told the Daily Echo

“…Callum was looking the other way. He didn`t move, he stood his ground and is perfectly allowed to do that. The goalkeeper kicked it at his back. It was a really strange decision and, ultimately, it cost us two points…”

“…We felt they were both clear penalties so you can see why we are slightly aggrieved.”

“I think I`d better leave it there, otherwise I could get myself in trouble. It is probably best I say nothing else.”
