After our fourth consecutive league defeat, AFCB’s next game is the third round of the League Cup and our opponents are Everton who we also meet a few days later in the league, both games at Dean Court. The Cup game is on Tuesday at 7.45 pm. The Cherries will be trying to avoid a fifth consecutive defeat. Probably see changes in both team’s starting lineups.

Everton have been in the final of the League Cup on two occasions and lost both times. The first time was in 1977 at Wembley Stadium against Aston Villa, it ended in a goalless draw and there was no extra time. The replay was at Hillsborough Stadium, it finished in a 1-1 draw. This time the game had extra time, but no more goals. For the first time in this competition, the two teams met a third time, the venue was Old Trafford, Manchester United’s ground, it finished 2-2. The game went into extra time, Villa notched the winner to make it 3-2. To this day it has been the only game to go to three games in this competition.

The second time Everton reached the final was in 1984, it was a Merseyside derby with Liverpool as the opponent, it was the first time these two sides had met at Wembley Stadium. The game itself was goalless which included extra time. The replay was at Maine Road the home of Manchester City. Liverpool scored the only goal of the game and took the League Cup back home to Anfield.

This season Everton were drawn away in the second round of the League Cup against another Lancashire club from League 1 Fleetwood Town. It was a journey of around 57 miles up the coast for the team from Merseyside. For the game itself, Everton made six changes from the team who had played the previous weekend in the Premier League at Goodison Park against Nottingham Forest in a 1-1 draw. The Toffees had to make a late change as Tom Davies had to drop out after the warm-up and was replaced by Demarai Gray who had started and scored the Everton equaliser the previous weekend. Gray scored the only goal of the game in the first half at Fleetwood and Everton were into the next round.

The only time we have met Everton in the League Cup at Dean Court was back in October 1985 in the second leg, the game finished 0-2. Gary Lineker scored in the first half and Kevin Richardson added a second after the break for Everton.

The first leg at Goodison Park finished 3-2, Colin Clarke had put the Cherries in front after 11 seconds and Colin Russell added a second. But half way through the first half Gary Lineker scored for Everton and before half-time they were back on level terms with a goal from Ian Marshall. Unfortunately, an own headed goal from Tommy Heffernan gave Everton the winner.

In all competitions against Everton, AFCB have W 4, D 2, L 8.

AFCB Team News
No reports of any new injury concerns after the Leeds trip.

AFCB Player To Watch
Our fans may get a chance to see Joe Rothwell get some proper minutes, after two short periods of coming on as a substitute in league games. Maybe Cameron Plain will be given a chance between the ‘sticks’.

Everton Team News
On their injury list are Andros Townsend with a knee injury, Ben Godfrey and Yerry Mina both have foot injuries. The latest player out injured is Dominic Calvert-Lewin who had to be substituted during the game against Leicester City with a hamstring strain.

Everton Player To Watch
Asmir Begovic our old goalkeeper most likely will start in this game. Lampard will probably give players like James Garner who did so well at Nottingham Forest on loan last season and Neil Maupay the signing from Brighton a start, as they have mainly come off the subs bench in league games.

Are we expecting full-blown changes for this one?

Are we really going to drop Mark Travers for the youth goalkeeper Cameron Plain who has been sat on the bench or can Will Dennis play as it’s not a league game?

Jack Stephens and James Hill at the back?!

Ben Pearson and Joe Rothwell in midfield?

Emiliano Marcondes, Jamal Lowe and Siriki Dembele in the attack? – To join the conversation, click here.
