AFC Bournemouth and Wales international David Brooks was dug out of a hole by his Cherries team-mates on Saturday afternoon after the 24-year-old got himself needlessly sent off against Nottingham Forest.

With his side 2-1 up away from home and already on a booking, Brooks inexplicably, under no pressure, pulled his opponent’s shirt, deep into Nottingham Forest’s own half. The referee was given no option but to show him a second yellow card followed by a red card, which left the Cherries clinging on to their slender lead for the best part of 35 minutes.

In his 126 appearances in all competitions to date, playing for Halifax Town, Sheffield United and AFC Bournemouth, this was the first red card of his career.

Brooks will now serve a one-match suspension, missing Wednesday night’s trip to Birmingham City, leaving the Cherries squad even further depleted.

Speaking to the Daily Echo after the game, AFC Bournemouth head coach Scott Parker said…

“I’ve explained to him exactly the disappointment. His team-mates have got him out of a hole today.

“He’s let his team down in that sense. He’s made a silly decision, it’s a stupid decision.

“He understands that. He’s sheepish in there, he knows exactly what he’s done and the mistake he’s made.

“This is what happens sometimes. Young players, developing players, and I put David into that bracket to be fair. He’s made a mistake.

“No problem, he needs to learn from that, not make it again and I’ll make sure of that.

“I’ll work with him and I’ll explain to him exactly how that is. But it was a silly mistake from him.”

Your say…

Brooks was idiotic but like Steve Cook at Norwich, it seemed kind of instinctive. We saw the best and worst of Brooks: superb goal but poor defensively, giving away the free-kick for their goal and ridiculous red card. Would be surprised if a Premier League club comes in with the kind of offer we might accept. – Join the conversation, click here.
