On Saturday, AFC Bournemouth travelled to the Amex Stadium to take on Brighton & Hove Albion buoyed by the new January transfer window signings of Antoine Semenyo, Matìas Viña and Hamed Traoré, who joined Dango Ouattara who had been signed earlier in the month.

Illia Zabarnyi and Darren Randolph didn’t make the squad.

The game remained goalless until Brighton player Kaoru Mitoma found the breakthrough and secured the points.

The result left the Cherries 19th in the Premier League one point adrift of safety from relegation after just one win in twelve league games.

After the match, O’Neil told BBC Radio Solent, as quoted by the Daily Echo

“I’m not interested in answering questions on my future, I’m fully comfortable with the situation as it is.”

Discussing the game he added…

“We should have got something out of the game.

“I thought the performance was good and I’m disappointed for the lads that they don’t take any points.

“I think we kept Brighton at bay. Of course, they dominate the ball, that’s the way they play.

“They create some chances, of course. They’re a good side, but I thought we were a real threat.

“I thought we arrived in attacking areas a lot of times during the match.

“My only criticism from there would be we have to score at least one goal from the situations that we create.

“And today was one of those days where we didn’t quite manage it.”

I thought we played much better today. There was energy and determination. The 2 new starters looked good. Philip Billing was better. I think we’re better without Ryan Christie and Lewis Cook.

Brighton weren’t great but we were well-organised and could have nicked a win.

In the context of recent poor results, it is another disheartening defeat. I didn’t think for a minute we’d give Brighton such a good game.

Removing Traore saw a change in the game. Our midfield was instantly worse. I hope there was a good reason for taking him off. If it was tactical it was a huge error. – To join the conversation, click here.

We still got carved open time after time by a severely weakened Brighton team. Didn’t create many chances, and didn’t particularly look like scoring. Took off our most impressive player, reverted to sitting deep and the same thing happened again because we don’t have a competent manager.

Kudos added…

It was wrong from the start we got absolutely battered and had already ridden out our luck by halftime.

People will obsess about the last 10 and I agree it was a mistake but 9 times out of 10 we’d be chasing the game by that point giving away the chances we did with no reply.

Should’ve had a penalty but was let down yet again by sub standard refereeing. Traore looked good and got taken off for an ineffective Christie. Brighton probably had the best chances and probably just about deserved the win but again we have thrown a point away late on. Thought Outtara did ok. Thought Semenyo looked decent. Traore looked higher level than what we currently have but the buck has to stop with Gary O’Neil. Time for him to go I’m afraid. – To join the conversation, click here.
