After the game, O’Neil told Sky Sports

“I’m struggling to give an answer on it really, The ball hits Lloyd Kelly at Nottingham Forest, it’s a penalty. The ball hits Jefferson Lerma at Newcastle, it’s a penalty.

“Tonight the ball hits their boy Salisu and it’s not a penalty.

“It’s a tricky one. I don’t know. Hopefully, the officials can clear up what it is and what it isn’t because I don’t see too much difference.

“Did we deserve to lose this one? No, we didn’t. But we did.”

That was absolutely shambolic. 5 at the back at home to Southampton is unforgivable.

Tavernier needs a couple of games out of the side. His set pieces are the worse Iā€™ve seen from a Premier League player.

No one knew what was going on. We brought 2 unfit players on against a side who were the most ā€˜up for itā€™ Iā€™ve seen all season.

Not sure why people saying Saints look poor is a positive. They beat us without having to go into second gear. This is after holding on for 45 minutes to a poor Fulham side.

Thanks Gary but if we need a proper manager ASAP.

Your say…

Hmm – we started with a defensive formation and a lineup at the back that shifted so often that it made your head spin. Fullbacks in a four swapped places then reappeared as CBs before returning to the back four. Who was more confused ā€¦us or them? We once again lacked width and Solanke was isolated and relatively easily contained. Our set pieces were dismal, subs too late, and key attackers left on the bench.

There was plenty of effort (Cook excellent) but little joined-up action around their box, hence a handful of shots on goal and those mostly tame. Very disappointing against mediocre opposition and – sorry to say – GO sounded like Parker in the post-match Solent interview (much mumbling about ā€œmomentsā€). Poor show Oā€™Neill – you can do better with this squad.

The first half was poor – so many people players underperformed. I thought GON changed things until he could get us to control the game.

The reality I think tonight showed the limitations of the team rather than the manager. Our squad is geared to a counter-attack and we lack the quality to break down packed defences tonight. I fear that without a star name like David brooks we donā€™t have the creativity

The team gave their all and for that, they should be applauded but the saints got a clean sheet fairly comfortably.

The one gripe I would have is not replacing Fredericks and Tavernier earlier given they were struggling.

Thought we actually played pretty well.

Southampton were rubbish.

We have defended 80 per cent possession and won, so it’s not like the shoe has never been on the other foot.

The crowd were terrible.

O’Neil tried to force the game, but when you add 3 of 4 players who are making their first PL appearances as influential substitutes, you really are wishing on a dream.

Rothwell
Stanislas
Demebele

It’s a big ask.

Thought Lewis Cook was rubbish again, I don’t understand the hype.

Back 4 were OK.

Tavernier is talented but lacks confidence.

Billing OK.

Solanke gets asked to do too much.

We are a good team, and that showed in our percentage stats, but we don’t have a single world-class player, and at this level, you need at least 1 or 2.

Thought Gary O’Neil did the best he could, given what he has at his disposal.

It was a very unfortunate result, as they were poor.

But we’ve gained 3 points doing the same thing to other teams this season.

Crowd, was almost silent.

The writing was on the wall when the BBC pundit tipped us to win, Southampton are the only team in the 92 EFL teams not to have played and conceded, and we were the only team in the PL not to have been defeated in the last 6 games.

We always break records that shouldn’t be broken. – Join the conversation, click here.
