Bournemouth lost 9-0 to Liverpool recently. It was not surprising to footie fans when Bournemouth decided to sack their manager, Scott Parker. The sacking is the first of the 21-22 Premier League season and is one of the earliest to happen in any Premier League season.

Why Did Scott Parker Get Sacked?

Apparently, it wasn’t just the abysmal result that encouraged the team to sack Parker, but his comments about the match too. Comments he made in post-match interviews suggest that he didn’t think the club was good enough. He criticised the recent recruitment strategy and spending in an interview before the club’s match against Aston Villa.

Max Demin, the owner of Bournemouth, has spoken against Parker, saying that for Bournemouth to be successful, everyone has to work together. Everyone must also respect and believe in each other, he said. With Parker behind an embarrassing defeat and openly critical of the club, it was inevitable that he would be on the way out.

Top Candidates

So who are the top candidates for the manager role? The following names are being rumored:

  • Sean Dyche: The former centre-back was the manager of Watford from 2011–2012. Then, he became the manager of Burnley, a position he held for nearly a decade. He won Premier League Manager of the Month twice: in March 2018, then again in February 2020. He’s also won Football League Championship Manager of the Month four times. Despite his credentials and awards, Burnley sacked him after the club fell into the relegation zone. His dismissal drew a lot of criticism, especially since the club’s interim manager failed to get them out of relegation.
  • Chris Wilder: This potential new manager of Bournemouth played football professionally from 1986 to 2001. He started with Sheffield United and played for several others, such as Bradford City and Halifax Town. From 2001 to 2021, he managed a total of five teams; since 2022, he’s been managing Middlesbrough. He was behind the club’s impressive win streak, where they won four out of five matches. His current win rate as a manager is 43.6%.
  • Gary O’Neill: Having played for nine clubs, Gary O’Neill is now the interim manager of Bournemouth. This is his first managerial position, and it remains to be seen how he will fare. If he does a good job, he could end up being offered the position on a permanent basis. If he doesn’t, Sean Dyche, Chris Wilder, or even someone else could take the reins instead. With O’Neill in charge, Bournemouth have won one match and lost one. It’s too early to say if he stands a chance of getting the job, but he shouldn’t be ruled out if the club’s future matches go well.
