The Cherries were unlucky to lose this afternoon as the League One outfit travelled to Southend United for the last match of 2005.
Southend were awarded a penalty on 20 minutes when Neil Young brought down Wayne Gray, and as the last man the defender saw red – reducing the Cherries to 10 men for the remaining 70 minutes. Gray stuck away the spot-kick to give the home side the lead.
A battling Bournemouth got back in the game with a goal from Stephen Foley, squeezing though a box of defenders to tuck the ball away past the keeper.
Southend saved the best for last though as Luke Guttridge unleashed a thunderous drive from 25 yards that arrowed across the outstretched Gareth Stewart and into the net 12 minutes from time.
Southend supporter Andy_S had this to say on watching this afternoons match…
I’ve got to say I was massively impressed with your side today. You always played good football when we were in League 2 together and I’m glad to see you’ve kept that up. Your movement off the ball was outstanding.
