AFC Bournemouth midfielder Marc Pugh is targeting a top half finish for the Cherries this season.

The Cherries dominant 4-1 victory over Leeds United on Tuesday night lifted the Cherries into tenth position in the Championship table.

With Eddie Howe’s side now 7 points adrift of the play-off places and 20 points clear of the relegation zone, AFC Bournemouth are looking to better their best ever finish in the second tier of English football.

That came under former manager Harry Redknapp during the 1988/89 campaign where the side finished 12th in the old second division.

This season is the clubs fourth year at this level, the previous years under Redknapp saw finishes of 17th with 49 points from a 44 game season in 1988. A finish of 12th with 62 points from a 46 games campaign in 1989, followed ultimately by relegation in 1990 with a 22nd place finish with 48 points from 46 matches.

So far this season, AFC Bournemouth have earned 52 points from 38 games and Pugh believes that a top half finish would surpass the clubs expectations.

Pugh told the Daily Echo

“We played some great stuff and it was probably one of, if not the best, team performance I have been involved in. We opened them up countless times and they didn`t know how to deal with us.

“Our front two caused them endless problems and it was an unbelievable first-half performance. We have come on leaps and bounds in the second half of the season and really stamped our authority on the division. Irrespective of where we finish, we have had a superb season.

“Anywhere in the top half would have been beyond our expectations and we have put ourselves in a great position. I think we have proved wrong a lot of people who doubted us.

“We put together a great run at the end of last season and who says we can`t do it again. We are seven points off the play offs and still have to play four of the teams around us. It is going to be an exciting end and who knows what might happen.”
