Pre-match Stat Attack – Wolves v AFCB

|

Written by Matt Stevenson

I’ve looked at the last 4 league games for Wolverhampton Wanderers. These were against West Ham United and Liverpool at home and Manchester City and Southampton away. They picked up 9 points from these games (3 wins), although xG estimated much lower returns with 3 points the most likely. In these games Wolves have scored 6 and conceded 4, whereas xG predicted (4.53 and 6.98).

The average position of the starting line-up shows that in all games the vast majority of players were in Wolves half, although this may be expected vs Man City and Liverpool and they played nearly 2/3 of the game versus Southampton with 10 men. The Wolves game is hard to interpret, with the average positions of six players being clustered around the centre circle.

Own Goals have been Wolves highest scorer over the last 4 games with 2, with Podence, Neves, Gomes and Dawson scoring 1 goal each. Only Ruben Neves has an XG of more than 1. No player has an xA of more than 0.60, so it is hard to predict a clear style of play. Wolves have created 31 chances and 3 big chances in these games, with the majority of chances being created down their right wing. For reference we have created 34 chances and 4 big chances, so we can go into this game with some optimism even if our fixtures may have been slightly easier. The goals conceded by Wolves have all been inside the box, with marginally more chances created down their right flank.

A key omission from the Wolves team is Lemina who is suspended. Podence who is joint top-scorer will have a fitness check before the game due to a slight groin strain. He is Wolves joint top league scorer this season with 5 goals along with Neves, who is on set pieces and has scored two from outside of the box. No other player has scored more than 1.

We’re at the point in the season where we really need the 3 points, but I’m feeling optimistic that we can pull it off. Not really anything to do with how good or bad Wolves are (recent wins being somewhat against the run of play based off of the stats, thanks Matt), though lacking Lemina may help us. Just the new signings seem to be gelling with the team and performances improving each week since the Forest game, keep improving and we can get all 3 points. – To join the conversation, click here.
