Language has not been a barrier for Colombia star

|

AFC Bournemouth midfielder Jefferson Lerma is currently away on international duty with Colombia.

Lerma has been named in his country’s side for this summers Copa America tournament, which will see Colombia face Argentina, Qatar and Paraguay later this month.

Following his club record move from Spanish side Levante to AFC Bournemouth for £25million, the Colombia international has become somewhat of a fan favourite at Dean Court.

His hard man approach to the game has added some much-needed grit and physicality to the Cherries midfield, which has enamoured him with the supporters but hasn’t gone down quite as well with the officials.

The 24-year-old received 12 bookings during the course of his maiden season in the top flight of English football.

He collected 9 from his first 15 Premier League games, walking a tightrope of a two-match suspension for the next 5 games before picking up his 10th caution of the season.

Following his suspension, he was only carded 3 times in his final 10 Premier League appearances.

AFC Bournemouth midfielder Jefferson Lerma told afcb.co.uk

“…I don’t think (discipline is) an issue. It’s part of football and you can get a yellow card at any time.

“I got most of my bookings in very specific plays, tactical tackles to stop the other team’s game. That’s what I had to do and I take it with responsibility. I did not want to get the cards but that’s football…”

“…I realise the supporters are fond of me. I have worked hard to get that. I am very happy to be welcomed like that in my first year. It is very encouraging and makes you feel like you are at home.

“English is something I must learn gradually, but football’s language is universal. Through hard work and following the coach’s instructions, I feel I have done a great job this season knowing very little English.”

Minutes per yellow

Lerma 202 mins
Arter 201 mins

I see Lerma was only 5th equal second, in the end, drawing with likes of Sokratis and Joe Bennett. Capoue top with 14! Was surprised to see Matt Ritchie on 9 though. – Join the conversation, click here.
