AFC Bournemouth defender Steve Cook is targeting a top half finish for the Cherries in only their second season in the top flight of English football.

Going into the final season of the 2016/17 Premier League season, AFC Bournemouth are currently 10th in the table.

There are still games to be played before the weekend, which means a top half finish is not solely in the Cherries hands, however victory over Leicester City would see AFC Bournemouth move to 48 points and set a new record for the Cherries in the top division.

Cook told afcb.co.uk

‘…We’ve got one more game and the incentives are still there for us to finish in the top half…’

Cook was also pleased to win the Daily Echo player of the season award for the current campaign.

He added…

‘I’m delighted and I thank the fans who voted for me, It tops off a really good season, hopefully I can keep improving and keep going.

‘I’ve not seen the awards properly yet, I don’t know who’s got them, they’re the first ever awards I’ve won so they’re really special.’

45 points and still counting – can it ever get better than this?

I reckon it really could next season – reasons to be positive :

1. Emerging players like Lewis Cook coupled with players like Fraser, Afobe and others improving all the time. And hopefully the summer transfer window will produce an oven ready player or two?

2. We are getting tougher at this level. Cut out that bit of casualness in the ‘ lesser ‘ games e.g. Each season we have dropped 9 points against the 3 relegated sides. Cut that to just 3 points and we are 6 ahead of this seasons ‘par’

3. We will surely beat Watford next season – 2 points a season hasn’t reflected our superiority over them. A win and a draw is + 2 on par.

4. We took 7 points off the big 6 this season, 1 more than last year – and it could have been more – we could have beaten Spurs & Arsenal at home. Let’ s aim for 10 points from the 12 games against the ‘elite’ . That would be + 3 on par

So if 45 is base case then I reckon we could hit 56 points next season. Plus of course it would be good to win at St Mary’s…..
