AFC Bournemouth captain Adam Barrett believes the signing of Simon Francis will prove to be a good move for the club.

Francis has been a long term target for manager Lee Bradbury and the Cherries had a bid in July accepted by Charlton, only for the transfer to collapse after failing to agree personal terms.

But on Monday a deal was made official for Francis to join the club on loan until January, when the move would then become permanent.

Francis made 180 appearances for Southend between 2006 and 2010 and Barrett spent three years as his team mate during that period.

Barrett told afcb.co.uk

‘He will be a real asset to the club. Simon is a big, strong lad, he’s quick, got great delivery and puts in an awful lot of crosses for a right back. He’s a good lad to have around the club as well, so I think he will be a good addition. Hopefully he will settle in and do very well here.

‘For whatever reason things didn’t work out for him at Charlton but Lee knows him well, having played and worked with him and knows exactly the attributes he’s got. It’s great for the club, because there’s a lot of quality and competition in the squad now.

‘I spoke to him in the summer when the deal was on first time around and he was disappointed when it didn’t happen. I’m delighted he’s here and look forward to catching up with him.’
