AFC Bournemouth manager Jonathan Woodgate is awaiting the result of a scan on Cherries defender Lloyd Kelly’s ankle, after the left-back hobbled off the pitch during the first half of AFC Bournemouth’s 4-1 victory over Millwall.

The 22-year-old joined the Cherries in May 2019, signed by former manager Eddie Howe from Bristol City for an undisclosed fee with previous reports suggesting a fee of around £13million.

Injury has meant that his career on the south coast has been somewhat stop-start, but this season has proven to be his breakthrough campaign in the Cherries colours.

Kelly has played 35 Championship games this season, with his versatility proving important splitting his time about 50-50 between playing at centre-back and left-back.

His best form of the season has come over the past month, returning from international duty with England Under-21, he has made the left-back role his own.

Unfortunately, he was forced to limp off on Wednesday night, with AFC Bournemouth awaiting the results of his scan ahead of the weekends game against fellow Championship play-off contenders Brentford.

AFC Bournemouth manager Jonathan Woodgate told the Daily Echo

“He’s got a slight ankle injury.

“We’ll have to assess him tomorrow. He’ll probably get a scan and hopefully it’s not too serious.”

Fingers crossed for Kelly but it didn’t look good. It was one of those ones where he got injured (was fouled as we were attacking and the ref ignored it) hobbled about a bit, ran back because he could see there was defending to be done and as soon as he hit the ball to clear he fell to the ground in pain. So one of those where he was able to run on it just about but as soon as he had to kick a ball he was in agony. I fear some kind of ankle ligament injury again, could be season over.
Maybe the damage is minor and he can recover quicker than expected. He really has been unfortunate with injuries in his time with us and deserves to play his part in the playoffs, which he (hopefully, don’t want to jinx it!) helped us to reach.

Your say…

How unlucky is Kelly? I think he’s been brilliant in this run of games and has formed a decent partnership with Danjuma. He’s been shaky at times this season but he’s quick, strong, doesn’t get beat and is very good at reacting quickly and snuffing out trouble. He’s improved on his tenancy to dwell on the ball and be indecisive too. Really looks like the player that everyone in the game rates so highly recently.

Fingers crossed for him and us.

I think his partnership with Danjuma will be a big miss for us if he is out for the season. Rico did really well as cover for him today but the game was already won by then. We will miss him if he can’t play, that’s for sure. Very unlucky so far but fingers crossed his luck is about to change and this one heals quickly. – Join the conversation, click here.
