AFC Bournemouth youngster Sam Vokes is to be rewarded with his first senior contract.

The 17 year old scored his first senior goal in the draw with Gillingham at the weekend and Cherries boss Kevin Bond has been so impressed with the youngster that he wants to reward him with a new contract.

Vokes is a product of the Cherries centre of excellence and is only 5 months into a 2 year apprenticeship.

Kevin Bond told the Daily Echo

‘I just need to have a chat with him and his parents to see what they think and we’d like to get him on a proper contract.

‘I spoke to him last week and told him we would take care of it. I told him we were aware of his current situation and were looking at it…’

‘…We included him in training for a week and thought ‘blimey, he’s not bad’. But you never know how they are going to react to a game situation when they are so young.

‘Fate played a hand in that because in some ways his inclusion against Forest was forced upon us with injuries to Steve Fletcher and James Hayter. But he didn’t do himself any harm and he’s been with us ever since.

‘He’s got a few problems with his calves and he struggles to last 90 minutes at the moment, but he’s only a raw youngster…

‘…’He knows he needs to work on other parts of his game, but he’s a level headed boy, he’s as good as gold and it’s a bonus to have him.’
