AFC Bournemouth youngster Sam Matthews, who has previously ‘caught the eye’ of Manchester United has signed his first professional contract.

As a 16 year old the deal is on a scholarship basis until he turns 17 in March when it becomes a two year professional contract.

Matthews who is an attacking midfielder and often operates as a winger has also joined up with the Cherries first team for the pre-season trip to Switzerland this week.

The Daily Echo have reported that his performances for the youth team have…

‘caught the eye of scouts from top-flights outfits including Fulham and Premier League champions Manchester United.’

However his talent has not been missed by manager Eddie Howe who has fast tracked him into the first team set-up in a similar manner to AFCB Vital sponsored Jayden Stockley.

AFC Bournemouth Director Of Football Tom Mitchell told afcb.co.uk

“We have been keen to offer Sam professional terms for some time now and it`s fantastic that he has committed his future to the club, He has impressed Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall, as well as the Academy coaches, with his ability, attitude and application in training and we are really excited to be working with him for the next three years.

“There was interest from Premier League clubs, but it just goes to show the direction the club is going in that he wanted to continue his development with us.”

Matthews added…

“I`ve been at the club since I was 10 or 11 and I love it here. I want to stay here and I`m really happy at the moment, I`ve just left school, so to be able to come in full-time and train with the first team has been really good.
