Sky Sports reporter Mark McAdam has confirmed that AFC Bournemouth had tried to sign Dan James from Swansea City prior to a deal being concluded with Manchester United.

The 21-year-old winger was an obvious Eddie Howe type target.

Young, full of potential, with pace and trickery and ready to make the step up from the Championship to the Premier League.

A former product of the youth system at Hull City, he joined Swansea City in 2014 for an initial fee of just £72,000 and made his full team debut in February 2018 in an FA Cup drubbing of Notts County, with James scoring on his debut in an 8-1 rout.

His league debut came during last seasons campaign and he would go on to make 40 appearances in all competitions for club and country after breaking into the Wales squad in November 2018 to make his debut against Albania, alongside AFC Bournemouth winger David Brooks.

That relationship, along with Cherries defender Chris Mepham, who is also an international team-mate with Wales, could have influenced a move to the south coast to play alongside exciting young prospects under AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe.

However Manchester United have now confirmed that they have agreed a deal in principle with Swansea City to wrap up the chase after James completed a medical at the clubs training ground.

Sky Sports have reported that the fee is an initial £15million, potentially rising to £18million.

AFC Bournemouth’s interest, however, does confirm that the Cherries are in the transfer market for a winger this summer.

Confirming the possibility that despite the current impasse in regards to Ryan Fraser’s longer-term future being in doubt, he could still leave ahead of the new season.

A very big jump for the lad, can’t help thinking an intermediate step (here or similar) would have been better, but good luck to him all the same. – Join the conversation, click here.
