Is Scott Parker the right choice?

Officially of course, over the space of less than four hours, 40-year-old Scott Parker left Fulham by mutual consent, travelled down to the south coast of England and agreed a new three-year-contract with AFC Bournemouth to become their new head coach, have all of the media snaps and interviews and then be formally announced at 10pm on Monday night.

The reality of course is probably something different.

AFC Bournemouth’s reported interest in Scott Parker has been held since the departure of Eddie Howe during the summer of 2020. The AFC Bournemouth hierarchy which includes club owner Maxim Demin, chairman Jeff Mostyn, chief executive Neill Blake and technical director Richard Hughes have wanted Parker at Dean Court since before Parker won promotion to the Premier League with Fulham.

Parker would go on to sign a new contract at Craven Cottage and that appears to have led to lengthy negotiations regarding his departure.

Tom Barclay a reporter for the tabloid newspaper The Sun, tweeted that in the end Fulham agreed a compensation deal of around £250-300k for Parker and the five staff-members that will be joining him at Bournemouth.”

Those five members of staff are Matt Wells who replaces Stephen Purches as the new assistant head-coach, Rob Burch who replaces Neil Moss as first-team goalkeeping coach. Alastair Harris who joins as head of performance, Charlie Moore as lead physical performance coach and Jonathan Hill first-team head analyst.

So AFC Bournemouth’s lengthy search for a manager comes to an end with the Cherries finally securing their “number one choice”.

AFC Bournemouth chief executive Neill Blake told afcb.co.uk

“It has been a long process but I am delighted to finally get our man.

“Scott has always been our number one choice for this role and someone whose coaching career we have taken a keen interest in since his first steps in Tottenham Hotspur’s academy.

“Over a period of time he has proven himself as one of the best young head coaches in the country; someone who has a clear philosophy on how he wants to play and knows what it takes to win promotion from the Championship.

“Scott is fully invested in the long-term project in front of us here, and this is the start of an exciting new period for this club.”

Talk of a long term project from both sides and the potential to recruit here has allegedly drawn Parker to us.
Sounds like Max Demin is serious about the Premier League, commitment seems to be unwavering.
Delighted that we didn’t get screwed for a massive compensation sum when Fulham clearly no longer wanted him there.
Probably ( with the new coaching staff ) one of the potentially most exciting appointments we could have made.
Feel sorry for Purchy and co but I’m sure Eddie Howe will come calling whenever he finally takes a job.
Delighted that we can now all focus on preparations for next season.
