AFC Bournemouth knocked Championship side Middlesbrough out of the EFL Cup last week.
Whilst advancing to the Quarter Finals of one of England’s main cup competitions was exciting, the Dean Court faithful also left excited by the prospect of Jack Simpson after an impressive first team debut.
The centre back looked assured defensively, but enjoyed a dream first outing as he scored, won a penalty and collected the man of the match award.
Simpson told afcb.co.uk…
‘…With the goal, I struggled to get there to be fair. The defender was grabbing me the whole time, but luckily I managed to make contact.
“Then for the penalty, the guy was grappling me the whole time. I was almost there and couldn`t quite get to the ball so I couldn`t stay on my feet any more.
“I thought I did well. You train with the first team so you can get used to the physicality, but it`s not the same as a game…’
His performance also impressed AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe, who believes Simpson is on the fringes of a Premier League squad appearance.
Howe told the Daily Echo…
“When you look at the injuries to Tyrone Mings and Brad Smith, we are stretched defensively.
“That was half in my thought when I decided to give him an opportunity, to see how he did when exposed to the competition and the pressure.
“He responded really well and it was almost as if his game stepped up a level with better quality players around him.
“A lot will depend on what happens with the form of the players who are playing at the moment but Jack is certainly close.”
One of the most impressive, complete debuts I’ve ever seen. Challenge now will be to keep his and our feet on the ground. Have to remember that Boro team is experienced, mostly the side that played PL last season (yes got relegated). For Simpson to stand out so against that is no mean feat.
Typical that he’s another left sided defender!! – Join the conversation here.
