AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe was delighted with the news that winger Matt Ritchie had signed a new contract with the club.

The Cherries winger had been the subject of media attention since the opening of the transfer window.

The Daily Mail had suggested that Championship side Fulham were preparing a £3million bid for Ritchie.

However that speculation was abruptly ended shortly before the Norwich City game with the Cherries announcing the news that Ritchie had signed a new three and a half year deal at Dean Court.

Howe told BBC Radio Solent

“Matt is a really important player for us, He`s a goal scorer and a creator of goals. He took his goal really well (against Norwich) and was lively throughout.

“It`s very good news for the football club that he has committed his future to us.

“I`ve always said that maintaining this squad by keeping it together will be our biggest challenge going forward.

“With Matt staying, it`s another piece of the jigsaw and we can build from there.”
