AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has praised captain Simon Francis following his 33rd birthday.

Francis initially joined the Cherries on loan from Charlton Athletic in November 2011, he would eventually make the move on a permanent basis for £25,000.

He has since gone on to make 277 appearances, earning promotion from the third tier in 2013 and playing a key role in the side winning the Football League Championship and promotion to the Premier League, just two years later.

Following an injury to Tommy Elphick, Simon Francis has also taken the responsibility of captain for the majority of time the Cherries have been in the top flight of English football.

Howe told the Daily Echo

“…When we first arrived, he was an out-and-out right-back, a marauding player who got up and down with great athleticism.

“He was technically excellent and, in our Championship season, he was huge in order for us to win the league.

“He is getting in a different stage of his career now, so we have moved him inside and tried to get the best out of him in the middle of the pitch and he has done very well there for us.

“It`s great to have that versatility within our squad and I think he is growing as a captain all the time. I have been really pleased with him.”

He has been outstanding. At right back in our championship season he touched levels of full back play none of us had seen before.

It will be interesting to see if Eddie sees a place for him next season or if he becomes a squad player.

No doubting he will always be an intrinsic part of our greatest days.
