AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe could hand development squad goalkeeper Benjamin Büchel his football league debut against Huddersfield Town.

The Cherries have struggled during pre-season for available goalkeepers.

First choice ‘keeper Lee Camp has missed the entire pre-season campaign due to a thigh injury.

Whilst it was thought that Camp’s injury would only be short term, second choice goalkeeper Ryan Allsop joined League One side Coventry City on a half season long loan, which does not include a recall option.

Third choice veteran ‘keeper Darryl Flahavan then also suffered a thigh injury during the training camp in Austria and he has sat out the majority of pre-season.

Which has left Benjamin Büchel filling in during the friendlies and Eddie Howe has been impressed by his performances.

Howe told the Daily Echo

“We will leave it as long as we can with Lee and Darryl. But the form of Benji has given us confidence that we don’t have to panic in this situation. He did very well during pre-season and, on merit, would have to be a contender to play.

“If it is for one or two games, I think you are much better off going with someone who knows you, knows how you work and your style of play rather than bringing in a similar body from say a bigger club.

“Darryl is at a similar stage to Lee in terms of his rehab and they are two very experienced goalkeepers who, if called upon, could both step in and play.”
