AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe described the Cherries hosting Spanish giants Real Madrid as a special day.
The nine time European champions came to Dean Court on Sunday evening and fielded a full strength side including former Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo, former Tottenham midfielder Modric and Brazilians Kaka and Pepe.
After an end to end opening 20 minutes, Real Madrid opened the scoring through a trademark Cristiano Ronaldo free-kick and went on to finish 6-0 victors.
But for Howe, when he was asked whether he had to pinch himself when he saw the Real Madrid line-up, he just referred to the evening as special for the supporters, especially those who have lived through the difficult times of administrations, transfer embargoes and Football League points penalties.
Howe told afcb.co.uk…
“I`m sure there would have been people around the stadium, especially those fans who had really endured the really tough days here, and this was a special day for them, The club has been through so much in recent years, but had a really good year last year and have now reached the Championship.
“It`s going to be a really tough season next year, but they are good days for the club and hopefully everyone enjoyed today and will enjoy next year because it`s rare that this club has ever played at this level…’
‘…We played as we normally do at home and we didn`t want to change anything too much. We wanted to really test the players with our style of football and try as much we could to take the game to them…’
