AFC Bournemouth captain Simon Francis believes a future target for this Cherries squad is to qualify for European competition.

After winning the Football League Championship and promotion to the top flight of English football, AFC Bournemouth have impressed upon the Premier League.

During their maiden season, the Cherries finished 16th with 42 points.

Their second season showed continued progression, finishing with an improved points and goals scored record.

A ninth place finish in the Premier League setting a new club record for the highest finish in the clubs history.

It could be argued that it’s hard to see how AFC Bournemouth can continue to improve much further, with somewhat of a glass ceiling in the top third of the Premier League.

However Francis believes that clubs like Southampton have proved that it is possible to break into those European places, either through a league finish or via domestic cup success in either the EFL or FA Cup.

Francis told the Daily Echo

‘…I don`t think European football is out of our reach. We have always asked, even in our League One days, ‘can we keep improving every season’? We have done that, so far. That is not to say we will be challenging for the title in three or four years.

‘But teams like Southampton have qualified for the Europa League. That is a step forward in the next few years and what the manager will want to look at.

‘He’s doing so well with us and I’m sure he would love to be involved in European football, as would the players…’

‘…As long as we keep improving under the manager, it’s not too far off.’

Your Say…

I never really thought..

that we would win promotion the season Eddie came back.
that we would comfortably stay up in the first season in Champ.
that we would win the Championship.
that we would comfortably stay up after dropping to 19th after Newcastle defeat
that we would finish 9th in our second season

So as for qualifying for Europe and/or decent cup runs – why not?

How much further is this dream going to go?
