AFC Bournemouth are set to re-sign Jermain Defoe on a free transfer.
Defoe originally joined the Cherries on loan from West Ham United in October 2000 and played 29 league games for the club scoring 18 times.
During that period he scored in ten consecutive Division Two fixtures.
He went on to score 41 times for West Ham United, 143 times for Tottenham Hotspur (two spells), 17 times for Portsmouth, 11 times for Canadian MLS side Toronto and 37 times for Sunderland.
He has also scored 20 times for England, with the most recent coming in March against Lithuania following a three year international absence.
Defoe is set to leave Sunderland following their relegation to the Championship, Defoe has a clause in his contract allowing him to leave on a free transfer following their relegation.
There had been links with a potential move to West Ham United, but the speed of the deal with a move to the south coast could suggest that this had been close to completion for some time.

Previous reports from the Mirror had reported that 34 year old Defoe had ‘been offered a two year deal in excess of £100,000-a-week and it is understood there is an option to extend it.’.
That figure has now changed with the same newspaper now reporting a ‘three-year deal with Bournemouth worth £65,000 a week’.
The report added…
‘despite original reports he would be earning over £100,000 a week, he is still set to earn over £3million a year.’

He scored for England last month…….
We are signing an England striker that if he stays fit will on evidence get 12 plus goals from open play next season and potentially with a team that creates chances for fun………more. Think of the amount of times Afobe didn’t get a clean contact or Wilson didn’t get a shot away. Even our Josh is only just starting to become a scorer of easy chances. Think of how many times the ball flashed across the six yard box with us moaning because there was no-one there…
It looks like we are getting him for £3m a year plus a £6m signing on fee. That is five million a year for three years. Add it all together and you get the sum we spent on Ibe.
Now – I know most people seem to think we are safe already next year but Eddie won’t be. We might lose King to an injury… £5m is the expense for next season on Defoe and if we stay up that will be worth £120m. I still can’t believe everyone isn’t over the moon.
The other key point to this is we are doing it so early. That, to my mind, is a deliberate ploy by Eddie.
