AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has played down the appointment of Hugo Faria as first team coach.

The 35-year-old holds the UEFA A Coaching License and has previously worked with Scottish sides Livingston and Airdrieonians.

As well as a highly qualified coach, Faria is also able to speak various different languages, something that will benefit Eddie Howe’s backroom staff when it comes to summer signings Diego Rico and Jefferson Lerma in particular.

Both players made the move from Spanish La Liga clubs to the Premier League prior to the start of the 2018/19 campaign for a combined total of in-excess of £35million.

However, neither player is fluent in English.

Discussing the appointment, Howe told the Daily Echo

“…He’s had a lot of experiences in European football and brings a unique flavour of different ideas.

“It was a natural part of our evolution to bring a Spanish-speaking, multilingual coach into the group, with the way the game is going and the way our recruitment may well go in the future…”

When asked whether that meant that foreign recruits would be prioritised over home grown players, which had previously been AFC Bournemouth’s main recruitment strategy, Howe added…

“…I wouldn’t draw too many conclusions from it but we have a group of players who need to be communicated with perfectly, We can’t take chances on information which may get lost. For that alone, it was important.”

Your say…
