AFC Bournemouth have now reportedly agreed a fee with Championship side Aston Villa for Cherries captain Tommy Elphick.
The news follows reports over the weekend that Elphick had been linked with a £3million move to recently relegated Aston Villa.
The Cherries captain, missed the majority of the season due to injury, AFC Bournemouth’s Championship winning skipper didn’t feature at all for side in the Premier League between 12th September 2015 and 2nd April 2016 due to an ankle injury.
Elphick required an operation after it was later revealed that he had chipped a bone in his ankle in the 4-3 win at West Ham in August.
Elphick slowly worked his way towards full match fitness with a number of appearances for the Cherries development squad and two appearances for the first team in the FA Cup in January 2016, but he could not break back into the Cherries back four whilst Adam Smith, Simon Francis, Steve Cook and Charlie Daniels remained fit.
Following Smith’s injury and Francis reverting back to full back, Elphick returned to the squad and played the final 7 games of the season.
The Birmingham Mail over the weekend referenced the fact that ‘Villa have been heavily linked with a £3m move’, but went on to add that they believed that the Cherries did not want to sell.
‘sources have told the Mail the Cherries won`t countenance a deal.’ the report stated before adding ‘In the long run that might turn out to be merely a negotiation tool but equally it could mean Eddie Howe has no intention of parting with a player who has been key to their rise through the divisions.’
But developments since that point appear to suggest that Elphick could be set to leave Dean Court.
Sky Sports have reported that a £3million bid has been accepted and added…
‘Central-defender Elphick, who has been with the Cherries since 2012 and has experienced promotion from League One and the Championship, is currently on his honeymoon in Italy, but his agent has been holding talks with Villa.

I gather that #AFCB captain @TommyElph4 has been considering a number of offers. #AVFC the standout at present. Has 1 more year on contract
A) Sign new contract at AFCB where you’ll likely be on the bench to add competition, given your position is one that obviously needs strengthening.
B) Move to a big club in need of fresh blood, first choice, pay rise, new challenge after several years at Bournemouth
It’s a logical step for Tommy I think.
I would be surprised if we hadn’t offered Elphick a deal, but I’m certain Eddie would have been honest about Elphick’s position in the squad. – Join the conversation here.
