When AFC Bournemouth completed the signing of Connor Mahoney from Blackburn Rovers it was reported as a hijacked move as he had supposedly been due to sign for Nottingham Forest.

Mahoney had made his Football League debut for Accrington Stanley in August 2013 and made 6 appearances before joining Blackburn Rovers less than five months later.

He made 24 appearances for Blackburn Rovers, with all but 3 of those appearances coming during the 2016/17 campaign, including 3 appearances for Blackburn Rovers Under 23’s in the Football League Trophy.

Mahoney looked keen to move from Blackburn following their relegation to the third tier of English football and was heavily linked with Championship side Nottingham Forest.

Mahoney had reportedly already had a medical and agreed personal terms with the Championship side, however due to Mahoney’s age the clubs would need to agree a compensation fee and Nottingham Forest could not agree a fee with Blackburn Rovers.

This left the window open for AFC Bournemouth to make their move and the Nottingham Post reported…

‘Howe hijacked the deal at the last minute, and the England youth international has ended up at Bournemouth, with the Cherries still thrashing out compensation with Blackburn.’

That compensation deal has taken almost a year to be agreed.

The Professional Football Compensation Committee (PFCC) met earlier this month and declared that AFC Bournemouth had to pay Blackburn Rovers an initial compensation fee of £425,000.

But with various add-ons, a further £750,000 could be paid to Blackburn, whilst if he is sold, 20% of any profit would also be paid to Blackburn.

afcb.co.uk released the details as follows…

– AFC Bournemouth must pay Blackburn Rovers an initial compensation fee of £425,000.

– In addition to the initial payment, AFC Bournemouth are to pay a further sum of £100,000 on the player making 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 first team appearances – a potential further payment of £500,000.

– The potential for international appearances has also been factored, with AFC Bournemouth expected to pay £250,000 in the event that Connor Mahoney makes a full senior appearance for England.

– Finally, Blackburn Rovers will receive 20% of any profit made by AFC Bournemouth in selling the player to another club at any point in the future.

I was under the impression that we’d arranged a fee before he signed. Else how would we get his registration, plus EPPP would have set a standard fee had we signed him a year earlier. They are assessing him a year later so how value has increased. Half mill in add ons AND a large sell on, they’ve buttered their bread both sides, bear in mind we signed him before the market went mental due to Mbappe and Neymar but we’re paying now based on the way that they’ve distorted the market, and the fact that we’re premier league. Would like to see what other 19 year old with about a dozen games under their belt go for between championship sides – Join the conversation, click here.
