AFC Bournemouth are considering a move for Aston Villa striker Cameron Archer according to reports.

The transfer speculation comes via Birmingham World, who have explained the rather intriguing transfer tangle that the 22-year-old is currently involved in.

Archer made the permanent move from Aston Villa to Sheffield United last season for £18.5million. However, the deal included a relegation clause, which makes Aston Villa obligated to buy him back. However, according to the report the fee is “far inferior to what he was sold for, meaning Sheffield United effectively paid an expensive loan fee.”

With Aston Villa being tied to re-sign a player who they have already deemed surplus to requirements, it won’t come as a great surprise that Aston Villa are reportedly “willing to listen to any offers made for Archer in the current transfer window” and could soon receive an approach from AFC Bournemouth.

Aston Villa however are not thought to be at risk of current profit and sustainability regulations, so it isn’t expected to be a fire sale.

A product of the Aston Villa youth system, Archer made his debut for Aston Villa in August 2019 in the Football League Cup, he would also represent Aston Villa Under-21 in the Football League Trophy just a month later.

For the 2020/21 season he went on loan to Solihull Moors in the National League scoring 4 goals in 26 appearances.

Whilst those numbers do not look overly emphatic, he began the 2021/22 season in astounding form, scoring 10 goals in seven games including a hat-trick for Aston Villa in the EFL Cup against Barrow and a second hat-trick for Aston Villa Under-21 in the Football League Trophy against Burton.

This was enough for Preston North End to offer him a chance in the Championship, which he took scoring 7 goals in 20 appearances.

Archer was again off to the second tier of English football with Middlesbrough for the second half of the 2022/23 season adding another 11 goals in 20 appearances to his career tally. He would go on to end the season with England Under-21 scoring against both Germany and Israel.

During the summer of 2023 Archer made the permanent move to Sheffield United, scoring on his Premier League debut for the club. But he would only go on to add a further three goals and Sheffield United went on to be relegated.

There’s a joke in here somewhere about replacing Solanke and his archer celebration with a guy called Archer.

Or, if he fails, maybe we should go with a guy called Cameron ensuring we’re out of Europe. – To join the conversation, click here.
