Former Bournemouth striker Ted MacDougall believes that thanks to Beckham, ‘soccer’ is now bigger than Basketball in the United States.

MacDougall is director of youth coaching with A League Atlanta Silverbacks and is currently on an English tour, with his Under 12’s, 13’s and 14’s sides and they are taking on AFC Bournemouth, Reading, Chelsea and Portsmouth.

But speaking about the growth of ‘soccer’ in America and the MLS in particular, MacDougall told the Daily Echo

‘…Beckham, and his wife Victoria, who I think is going to love being in LA more than him, are getting the most amazing hype in the media.

‘The funny thing is, the major TV companies don’t like soccer because it is not good for adverts. There are no natural breaks in the play, like in other American sports…

‘…With Beckham, now the game at that level has gone through the roof. It has taken over from basketball.
