AFC Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake has admitted that this season was a really important one for his career.

Ake made the permanent move to the south coast in July 2017, for an undisclosed fee, which had been reported in the region of £20million.

He opted to leave Premier League champions Chelsea for a return to Dean Court after previously enjoying a half-season loan spell with AFC Bournemouth in 2016.

The then Netherlands Under 21 international had impressed following a run of starts in the Premier League where he has scored three goals.

He initially had to bide his time to break into the AFC Bournemouth XI, but when his chance came he held on to the shirt and ended his loan spell with 12 appearances, 8 of which were consecutive starts in the Premier League.

He was later recalled to Chelsea to play a small role in their Premier League championship season, playing 98 minutes in total against Everton and Watford and would and would end the season playing for the Netherlands against Luxembourg.

This season, Ake has made 35 Premier League appearances, winning virtually all of the player of the month awards and is the runaway favourite to win the AFC Bournemouth player of the season award.

Ake told the Daily Echo

“This season was really important for my career. It has helped me so much and I am very happy so far but it is not finished yet.

“I came here to try to improve myself, get in the team and be an established player. I always want to improve and do better.

“There are still games I look back at and think ‘what am I doing here or there?’. I am never satisfied…”

“…The manager has helped me a lot, he is always trying to improve me. If the game ends well he is still trying to find things that can go better and that helps.”
