AFCB v Manchester City – Reaction & Highlights

|

AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe told afcb.co.uk

“We had our chances and that was the frustrating thing.

“If you compare this game to our previous encounters against Manchester City, I think that was the most we have created by a long way…”

“…We were without the ball for long spells, we had to really dig in and the lads left everything on the pitch which is all I can ask of them…”

“…Today’s team had a lot of pace and power in it and I thought we were efficient in the situations we needed to be.

“We were a lot better on the ball in those moments on the counter-attack and I thought our bravery was good. Of course, we’re frustrated to lose but there were a lot of positives to take.”

Individual errors and lapses in concentration at the back along with poor finishing the reason we lost today.

Relatively even on chances but the game is decided by what happens in both boxes.

Few thoughts:

-cutbacks. This is something we need to address. Consistently when the opposition is cutting the ball back from the bi-line all of our defenders drop deep and leave opposing forwards unmarked. Not one of our three centre backs was marking Aguero for the first goal today, regardless of his quality, it is criminal that he’s allowed that much space to take a touch and finish around the six-yard box.

-Ramsdale decent couldn’t do anything about the goals.

-Thought Mepham again looked a bit out of his depth in a back three, really like him in a back 4 but not sure he’s suited to the three.

-Billing and Lerma were both superb again, they really are the heartbeat of this team. Billing especially looks quite some player not sure how we’ve got him from £15million!

-Really feel for Charlie Daniels, pray it wasn’t as bad as it looked.

-Harry Wilson was good, superb free-kick and a lot more suited to playing behind a frontman than wee man. Good vision and passing.

-wee man. I feel for him after this one, to be honest, he was again ineffective until he moved to wingback but this is because he doesn’t possess the attributes to play centrally. He is great at what he does but doesn’t have the natural footballing brain and technical ability to play make in central areas. He only ever looks comfortable out wide. Might get shot down for this but that’s how I see it! Having said that his crossing was woeful again! He needs to be a bit careful, not sure he realises how good he’s got it being a guaranteed starter at a prem team! Had he performed like this for say West Ham he’d be out the team in a heartbeat.

-King was excellent, great work rate and strength.

-Callum was quiet, he simply needs to score that one v one. The game hinges on that moment. Worked hard.

-VAR is a joke, city should have had a penalty in all honesty.

-at the end of the day, you can’t fault the work rate and as a fan, all I ask for is the players to give their all which I feel they did today.

Dirtiest opponents at home since Spurs (ie Sheff Utd weren’t dirty) . Lots of leaving a foot in after the ball had gone, particularly DeBruyne. Usual refereeing performance we’d expect against a top side…

…But we had enough chances to get something today against one of the best elevens ever seen in this country.

VERY proud of our team today – and their fans were virtually silent until they got the third. – Join the conversation, click here.
