AFCB v Luton – Highlights & Reaction

|

AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe told the Daily Echo

“I’m delighted with the scoreline, the performance, the attitude of the players and the crowd as well…”

“…Was it perfect? No. No game is. I am always going to see areas that we can improve.

“But it was much more like us, quicker passing, more attacking intent. We scored the four goals and could have scored more – but very pleased.

“We knew how important today was. We needed to win.

“I say every year when we enter this competition, we want to win and we want to progress. It’s no different there, we’ve just produced a very good performance.”

Interesting points for me were there were signs of what we might see for the rest of the season with a much notably higher positioning of the fullbacks and Junior Stanislas in a number ten role. Personally I would have liked to have seen Harry Wilson there just to see but if the full-backs are going to be that high up him and Ryan Fraser will be able to get more central anyway.

A clever decision from Eddie Howe to not suffer a morale-sapping defeat and to put a feel-good factor into training before a crucial game against Watford on Saturday.

I agree that Andrew Surman was man of the match – I spent the whole game wondering if he could play like that still at the top level as his intelligent recirculating of the ball is a joy to watch. Diego Rico I thought was outstanding too.

A final word for Dominic Solanke – I owe him that as one of his critics. He worked hard today and didn’t let the unbelievable luck of his disallowed goal to get his head down. Great through ball for Stanislas and then finally that moment we will all be able to say we were there for…. he earned that and let’s hope it sparks off a mental barrier. All over the world in symbolic gestures ducks were breaking in two, black cats were smiling, monkeys were climbing off backs of things and mirrors were piecing themselves back together.

Today was the game we needed, at home to a Luton side who were very poor and low on confidence and bottom of Championship, we got the win, 4 goals, 2 out of form strikers scored and we progress into next round of the FA Cup we all love.

We showed some fight today which was what we all wanted. Good 2nd half performance. Eddie got the team selection spot on with a few rested but a strong lineup with the players we had available, we did look nervy and low in confidence in 1st half but thankfully they missed their big chance with the pen.

Surman was my MOTM he made us tick in the midfield and rolled back the years directing the ball for the forwards to attack. Mepham and Rico did well and Fraser made more runs today than he has all season. Even Francis was playing like a winger in the last thirty. We still need to be more direct and clinical in the final third but it’s a good start.

Billing – good 2 goals but some madness with the pen and Cornick’s chance needs to cut that out of his game. A much-needed confidence boost for Solanke & Wilson with goals. Let’s use this as a springboard for a good performance as we come into this crucial set of fixtures against teams around us. – Join the conversation, click here.
