AFC Bournemouth manager Jonathan Woodgate’s losing streak continued with a terrible first-half performance against Cardiff City too much to recover from.

The simplest of corner routines was headed beyond Cherries goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, as the lazy coaching trait of zonal marking was undone. The visitors second was gifted to them from the home side, as Diego Rico gave away a penalty.

Half-time came and went, as did the 5-2-2-1 with Arnaut Danjuma and Shane Long coming on for Rico and Lewis Cook. This gave AFC Bournemouth a bit more joy and attacking threat, the substitutes involved in the Cherries single goal of the game, but it wasn’t enough to salvage a point.

The result enabled Cardiff City to leapfrog the Cherries into the play-off places, AFC Bournemouth now seventh, the lowest they’ve been since relegation from the Premier League.

AFC Bournemouth manager Jonathan Woodgate told Sky Sports

“We lost the game in the first half. We gave them a leg up with the penalty which was not good enough and came from sloppy play. We were a lot better second half and it could easily have ended up 2-2.

“At least we have another game against Watford on Saturday. We need a reaction. I want the players to show how much they are hurting. There is a long way to go in the season and a lot of twists and turns in the Championship.”

Like most people, I always feared when we went down, it would be a one-season opportunity to bounce back.

I hoped we might be one of those teams that hung around for years, like Coventry, Wimbledon, Southampton did, because it’s easier to stay there, then get back.

Looking back, the way we went down was sickening, but that is nothing to this season.

Woodgate seems like a nice guy, but when I saw that lineup last night, I knew what to expect, just as I know to expect relegation next season.

We have been crap, most of the season, interspersed by individual brilliance from time to time.

Luckily there are other things in life because watching what Eddie Howe and yes, Jason Tindall, built, being so quickly unraveled by people out of their depth, and unable to manage a group of overpaid, underperforming players is shameful and so disappointing, and yet so utterly predictable.

Turns out, as we all knew deep down, we are just another Blackpool, Swindon, and others who had their moment in the sun, albeit thanks to Eddie, it was over half a decade of brilliance in our case.

Thanks, Eddie, and has already been proved, you will never be matched, and nor will your achievements.

Your say…

As this season progresses I’m made even more aware of what an amazing few years we had under Eddie. It is breaking my heart that the mini-miracle Howe created is just dissolving in front of my eyes, and so quickly too – all because we have people in the boardroom who lack even an ounce of the vision, work rate, and bravery Eddie had. The fact I’m powerless to stop it is truly painful. – Join the conversation, click here.
