Actions speaking louder than words at Bournemouth

|

AFC Bournemouth full-back Adam Smith has signed a new two-year contract with the Cherries.

Both Smith and Junior Stanislas were out of contract at Dean Court at the end of the 2020/21 campaign and neither had joined up with the squad for pre-season training this summer.

Smith has appeared to indicate that he was perhaps waiting to see what would happen with the managerial decision at Dean Court before committing his future to the club.

Smith told afcb.co.uk

“I spoke with my agent and my family about what was best for me, it was a massive decision because I’ve been here a long time.

“The thing that did it for me was Scott Parker and Matt Wells who I know from Spurs, Rob Burch as well. It just shows how much the owner and the club want to get back in the Premier League.

“Actions speak louder than words and that told me the whole story.”

Smith first made the move to Dean Court from Tottenham in September 2010 on a youth loan and went on to make 42 appearances for the Cherries that season.

AFC Bournemouth reached the League One play-offs that season, with Smith’s final game for the Cherries coming at Huddersfield as Lee Bradbury’s side were knocked out on penalties.

During his time away from the south coast, Smith earned 11 England caps at Under 21’s level and has gained experience in the Premier League and Championship with Tottenham, Leeds, Millwall and Derby.

He then re-joined the Cherries on a permanent basis in January 2014 and played a key role in the club’s promotion from the Championship to the Premier League and the following 5 seasons in the top flight of English football.

Now 30, Smith has added 242 appearances in all competitions to his total tally of 284 appearances for the Cherries.

AFC Bournemouth chief executive Neill Blake added…

“I’m delighted that Adam has committed his future to the club.

“He is proven at the highest level and has been a key part of the squad throughout the past seven-and-a-half years.

“Adam shares the same ambitions as everyone here; to help us get back to the Premier League.

“His experience, attitude and ability will be incredibly valuable to us over the next two seasons.”

Find it hard to believe he first played for us in 2010. Not that many games until he is in top 10 AFCB appearances, bit like Steve Cook he goes under the radar, both great servants of this club. – Join the conversation, click here.
