AFC Bournemouth have announced that Jason Tindall has formally succeeded Eddie Howe as the new AFC Bournemouth manager, signing a new three-year contract at Dean Court.

Cherries owner Maxim Demin, who until last week had maintained a silent owner status, declared that Tindall was the stand-out candidate to take over the recently relegated side.

AFC Bournemouth chief executive Neill Blake, AFC Bournemouth technical director Richard Hughes and AFC Bournemouth owner Maxim Demin were part of the decision making process.

Whilst the other contenders were never officially in the public domain, it had been widely thought that former Swansea City manager Gary Monk and former Brighton & Hove Albion boss Chris Hughton had been in consideration, along with former Chelsea captain and Aston Villa first-team coach John Terry and England women’s manager Phil Neville.

“Jason has played a huge role in this club’s success over the last decade and fully deserves to step up and become our new manager.

“While his knowledge of and passion for the club is unquestionable, he was the standout candidate for this role.

“He has huge enthusiasm for the project and great ideas to get the best out of a talented squad.

“This is the start of a new era for this football club and I’m excited about what the future holds.”

42-year-old Jason Tindall is of course well known to the Dean Court faithful as a player and as an assistant manager.

Tindall joined the Cherries in August 1998 and made 195 appearances before he left the club for the first time in 2006. He went on to make 17 appearances for non-league side Weymouth and became player-manager of the club before his departure in 2008.

Later that year he made his return to Dean Court as Jimmy Quinn’s assistant, but after just 121 days Quinn was sacked.

Tindall, however, remained at Dean Court as assistant manager as he saw Eddie Howe come in and named manager on New Years Day 2009.

From 2009 until the summer of 2020, Tindall remained as Eddie Howe’s assistant overseeing two spells at AFC Bournemouth either side of a short spell at Burnley.

He also stepped out of retirement and added four additional appearances to his AFC Bournemouth career, most notably notching an assist for Mark Molesley at Dagenham & Redbridge during the greatest escape season of 2009.

During the Eddie Howe era, AFC Bournemouth avoided relegation from the Football League and into non-league football despite a 17 point penalty, won promotion from League Two the following season despite a transfer embargo, winning promotion from League One in 2013 and winning the Championship in 2015. A period that will never be matched or forgotten in AFC Bournemouth’s history and Jason Tindall played a big part in that success.

The following year Jason Tindall earned his UEFA Pro Licence and AFC Bournemouth enjoyed five seasons in the Premier League before dropping out of the top flight of English football and back into the Championship.

Tindall inherits a squad full of exciting young players who are yet to unlock their full potential but are low in confidence following relegation and the departure of Eddie Howe.

Newly appointed AFC Bournemouth manager Jason Tindall told afcb.co.uk

“It’s an honour and a privilege to be the manager of such a great football club, Given the success of the club over the last 12 years, with Eddie in charge and me by his side, I’m not going to come in and rip everything up and start again. I would be a fool to do that.

“But I’m my own person with my own ideas and I will be looking to implement them as soon as we get back on the training ground.

“I know the Championship is a very tough league but my aim is to get this club back into the Premier League at the first time of asking.

“This is a challenge that I feel I’m ready for and one I’m looking forward to.”

Tindall’s first job as AFC Bournemouth manager will be to appoint his backroom staff.

It is widely expected that Cherries coach Stephen Purches could make the step-up to become assistant, however, Shaun Cooper and Mark Molesley who have been part of the developmental and youth squads could also take steps up the ladder.

Tindall’s attention will then turn to whether or not he should offer new contracts to three players who are currently out-of-contract at Dean Court. Simon Francis, Charlie Daniels and Andrew Surman are currently all free agents having previously signed short-term extensions so that they could be available for the return of professional football following the suspension of the Premier League following the global coronavirus pandemic.
